PRE-K 4-YEAR-OLD PROGRAM (Continued) |
The four year old program puts an emphasis on Kindergarten readiness. We cover the alphabet in written form, visual recognition, and auditory discrimination. We also introduce a few words that begin with each letter. We teach pre-reading skills such as using picture clues, story retells and predictions to better understand stories. Four year olds get ready for math by recognizing numbers, counting, patterning, and even beginning to do simple addition and subtraction skills through a variety of games. Several of our manipulatives give us a chance to have some geometric fun. It is always the most fun to learn those counting skills in several languages. We learn to count in Spanish, French and German, and count ourselves in line every day in the language of their choice! Becoming pirates and going on bear hunts get us ready for beginning map skills. While we are explorers, we learn about different parts of the world. In transportation, we figure out what ways we could use to get there. Science is a natural gift for a four year old, and we use their innate curiosity to make volcanoes, learn about clouds, figure out what sinks or floats, discover the world of dinosaurs and watch the changing seasons. We build a rain forest to learn some animal adaptations. We learn who is fastest, who is slowest, who is big, who is loudest and who has the most colors. We take a trip through space to find out what planet is the biggest, the hottest, the nearest, the red one, and the blue one. Let's not forget the joy of a good Hokey Pokey or "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" for body awareness and a good belly laugh whenever we need one. Mostly our curriculum is aimed at making their first school experience a great joy and one that will have them wanting more and more of a great education at Sacred Heart School. Homework Of course there is homework in Pre-K!!! Once a week, one child gets to bring home the "sound bucket" to fill with things that begin with the letter we are working on that week-a family project that is sure to bring some giggles to everyone. We journal later in the year. Each child takes home a stuffed animal for the weekend and draws his or her story of the visit. The child tells Mom or Dad in the child's own words so that Mom or Dad can write them down. Storytelling begins early-why wait?! The most important homework they have is to READ, READ, READ!!!! Every night for 10-15 minutes. |
